DISCUSSION QUESTIONS
- In 3:7 we read, “Israel did what was evil in the sight of the LORD.” This statement is followed by two descriptions of the evil committed. What was the twofold evil Israel committed, according to verse 7?
- Read Deuteronomy 8:11–20 and summarize the danger of what it means to “forget” the Lord in the context of Israel’s covenantal relationship with God. What should Israel remember?
- Do you consciously enjoy the “peace” of having been saved from God and freed from slaving for idols? How will you remember to enjoy it this week?
- The account of Ehud and Eglon is filled with interesting detail and description. For example, each man is described with one particular physical trait that plays a major role in the narrative (vv. 15, 17). What physical trait is specified for each man? Why are these traits important to the narrative?
- How are you “left-handed”? How does this humble you? Do you ever try to do deals with God? How do you need simply to surrender to him, and enjoy the rescue he freely gives to you?
- Shamgar, the Philistine Assassin (3:31) In what way is the account of Shamgar different from the accounts of Othniel and Ehud? In what way are these accounts the same? What specific characteristic of a judge is applied to Shamgar?
- Take a few minutes to ask for God’s help to grasp the significance of Othniel, Ehud, and Shamgar as saviors of God’s people and types of Jesus, our ultimate Savior. How are we like the people of Israel in the book of Judges, forgetting God’s grace and pursuing cheap idols? What are the cycles of sin that we experience in our own lives, and how has God graciously rescued us from the oppression of sin’s cancerous grip on our lives? Cry out to the Lord, for He is ready and quick to save.
