Sermon Discussion Questions

Passage: Hebrews 6:13-20

1. Read Genesis 22:15-18. How long did Abraham wait from the time that God had promised he would have a son to the time that Isaac was born? (Answer: 25 yrs, from age 75 to 100). After all that waiting, Abraham was willing to trust God in sacrificing his son. This is the context for our passage in Hebrews 6.

2. How could Abraham be sure that God would make good on his promise to bless him with many descendants?

3. What’s the difference between a promise and an oath? Hint: think about the practice of swearing in with a hand on the Bible even in modern day courts. (Answer: an oath is given as confirmation of a promise or an agreement that is made. This was used as a common legal device in ancient times just as it is today).

4. Why did God swear by himself? Shouldn’t God’s promise be good enough, since he is perfect? (Answer: Not only did he swear by himself because there was no one greater by whom to swear, but he did it for the sake of Abraham. God never needs to swear by himself because he is perfect, but he did it for Abraham so that Abraham could be certain of his promises).

5. Take a moment to reflect on some of the promises God has made to us in this passage as well as previous passages in our study of Hebrews. Which promises are you struggling to believe and wait for with patience?

6. What is our sure and steadfast anchor for the soul? What does it mean that it (or he) has entered into the inner place, behind the curtain?

7. Where do you see the gospel message in Hebrews 6:13-20? (Curt’s answer: The good news of the gospel is not only that Jesus has died to take our sins, but as a result, he has entered into the presence of God the Father in heaven. He is our great High Priest. The beautiful metaphor here is that we are anchored to him in hope right now).

8. At the risk of stating the obvious – what is the purpose of an anchor? What lesser things are you tempted to trust as anchors for the soul? How has that been working out?

9. Spend some time praying that God will give you the patience to trust in him and believe in his promises right now and for the future.
