READ 1 Corinthians 14:26-40

Pastoral Note: For some of you the gifts of speaking in tongues, interpretation and prophecy will be familiar from churches that you have been a part of but for others they will be quite new. Our main purpose in looking at these verses is actually NOT to decide whether they are for today’s worshipers or not BUT to discern the ways in which the Spirit wants us to deal with him and with others in worship.

  1. What spiritual gift would you say that you have been given? In what ways do you participate in the worship or life of the church using your gift?
  2. What basic principles do we find in 1 Corinthians 14 that should guide all use of gifts of the Spirit in worship services?
  3. [26] What seems to be the priority for Paul as he talks about worship?
  4. [27-33a] What is Paul’s simple message for those who speak in tongues [unintelligible languages], those who interpret and those who prophesy here?
  5. [33b-35] What is Paul almost certainly not saying to us about women in worship [Hint – looking at the speech described for women in 1 Cor. 11:5]? This likely has to do with women speaking with teaching and ruling authority in a church worship setting, why do you think Paul has such a strong reaction to it? Who else has he called to show submission in this chapter?
  6. [36-38] What are the underlying problems Paul addresses in these verses and what does he call everyone reading them to recognize?
  7. PRAY for our worship and common life in our church. We have many gifted people but fewer places for people to express their gifts in the limelight. Where is the Lord calling you to serve with your gift? Will this require any of the qualities that Paul has been describing here?
