SERMON DISCUSSION QUESTIONS
READ John 1
READ John 1:6-7 over again
1. Imagine yourself sitting by a roaring, winter’s log fire with children. You are telling them a story about the Creator and His dealings with human beings. You’re getting to the part where Jesus comes in. You’ve been talking about a loving, perfect, holy being who’s a long way away. How do you introduce Jesus who is coming from God but who is going to be very near us?
2. How has John started his story in verses 1-5? Why is it important that the story started this way and not with the record of humanity’s reaction to Jesus?
3. In verse 6, John introduces the figure of John the Baptist? What does he say about him?Why do you think that it is important that John is named? Does this imply something about the way the Creator who has become a flesh and blood human being will interact with us?
4. John says John the Baptist was sent on a mission. Who sent him and what was his mission? (v. 7a) READ Isaiah 40:3-5. Why do you think John describes Jesus as the Light?
5. Your mission as a follower of Jesus is not the same as John the Baptist’s unique mission, but in what ways is it broadly similar? What are you sent to bear witness to about Jesus? (Hint: READ John 1:29.)
6. You can imagine John the Baptist’s excitement when he declared about Jesus , “This is He!” (repeated twice in verses 15 and 30). Do you still share that same excitement when you tell your friends about the LORD who has arrived in your life?
7. Praise God for the joy of Christmas – that it is not a depressing, gloomy or angry thing to tell people that Jesus Christ has come for them to be their light and their salvation!
