Sermon Study Questions
Habakkuk 1-2
- Which of the following do you think is NOT true: God is good, God knows everything that will happen, God has control over everything that happens (including bad things]?
- The book of Habakkuk is concerned with the problem of evil, that is whether we can trust that God is good, knows everything and controls all things. In your own words summarize Habakkuk’s complaint in verses 1-4.
- How often do you struggle with the fact of evil in the world? Why do you think Habakkuk is so upset about it? Is he right to be? Should we be too, given the character of God?
- God answers Habakkuk’s complaint in 2 parts. In chapter 1, He explains how He is going to deal with the evil in Israel. What is surprising even shocking about what He says?
- The Babylonians were certainly evil but reading God’s description of the characteristics of how evil shows itself in a person, is it just the Babylonians?
- Reminding ourselves that the Bible is clear that no one is righteous and that all are corrupt, what hope can you find in the passage that sinners like ourselves will be saved?
- Thank God that He has shown you not only His goodness but also your own evil and great need of His salvation. Praise Him that He has drunk the cup of God’s judgment that has set us free!
