SERMON DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

Mark 10:17-31
“Testing and Costing”

1. What does Jesus mean when He says the kingdom of heaven belongs to those who are like a child?

2. How is the rich young man approaching Jesus? What might be motivating him?

3. What surprises you about how Jesus responds to the rich young man?

4. What does the rich young man “lack” according to Jesus? How does the context of becoming like a child help us understand the problem for this rich young man?

5. What does this passage teach us about wealth and salvation? How can the two be connected?

6. Read 2 Cor. 8:8-9. Paul is encouraging the Corinthians to give generously from the heart. How might the gospel motivate us to give up possessions, comforts, even the familiarity of home to follow Jesus? What will be the reward/outcome for those who do?

7. Where do you see aspects of the rich young man in yourself? What things might be controlling you or preventing you from radically following Jesus.

8. What do you think are some ways in which those who seem to be first in life will end up last and vice versa? How can we apply this principle to our daily lives and the motivations of our hearts?

9. Read Mark 8:34-38. Take some time to pray as a group that God would give you what it takes to follow Him at all costs for the sake of the gospel.
