SERMON DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

READ Zechariah 12:1-13:9

  1. I once knew someone whose father was the police chief in his small town in Michigan. When some boys confronted my friend to bully him, his dad saw and just went to stand beside his son. Needless to say, the bullies left in a hurry! How has knowing that the LORD is Creator and Almighty changed the way you feel about crises (or at least might have done)?
  2. In verses 2-9 God declares that he will transform Jerusalem into his means of judgment against the nations. Zechariah is shown four images of what this will mean. Can you identify these and explain what they say about God’s transforming power among His people?
  3. How will this be different than it was in Zechariah’s day? What will it take to transform a situation in your life that is very difficult? Is it more difficult for the LORD to do this for you than for Him to do this for Zechariah?
  4. What will result from the LORD pouring out “a spirit of grace…and mercy upon His people” (vv.10-14)??
  5. Reading the text carefully, what does verse 10 refer to? Who will mourn when they see him? Will it be a self-pitying mourning or a repentant mourning? What leads you to say this from the text?
  6. If this is a picture of the far future, how is it also true in our experience of God’s grace? How do we mourn when we see Him? What does it lead to in us by His mercy and grace?
  7. Lift in prayer all those you know who are in crisis, deciding today whether they will trust in God’s promises or not? Pray for them that they would see Jesus Christ!
