DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

  • Take the time to read both Judges 4 & 5. In chapter 5, notice the added details to the narrative of chapter 4. Also take note of the theological depth that chapter 5 brings to the narrative of chapter 4. Discuss those details.
  • What does 4:1-3 tell us about Israel…and tell us about ourselves?
  • Why do you think that Deborah was a judge and prophetess? In what ways does she use her role to call other leaders to perform the task that God had given them thereby bringing freedom and victory to the Israelites?
  • In what ways does God providentially provide for Israel’s deliverance and Sisera’s death. Be specific.
  • In what ways does chapter 5 portray the True Hero of this story?
  • How does the victory and Sisera’s death give us a picture of God’s salvation?
  • Are there any difficulties in the way that God uses Jael to bring salvation to Israel? Explain
  • What does this narrative tell us about God’s patience with His people and His faithfulness to them in spite of their constant failure? How does that translate to you and your life? How does 2 Peter 3:8-10 relate?
  • Take some time to think through the specific ways in which God is patient with you…the ways in which He fights for you. Then take the remainder of your time to pray prayers of praise and thanksgiving to Him.
