SERMON DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

Read Mark 9:2-29

  1. Compare and contrast the two sections of verses 2-13 and 14-29. See also Matthew 17:1-20 and Luke 9:28-43.
  2. Other than the actual sequencing of events, do you think it’s valuable that these two situations are placed here? Why? Why not?
  3. Why do you think Jesus took only Peter, James and John?
  4. What is the significance of the appearance of Moses and Elijah? What about the significance of the cloud?
  5. What do we learn about Jesus’ nature from this experience? How does Peter’s reaction to the transfiguration reveal his understanding of Jesus?
  6. Does the instruction to ‘tell no one until after the resurrection’ impact the meaning of the transfiguration at all? If so, how?
  7. What does this passage reveal about the disciples’ struggle with faith? How does the father model faith, even in doubt?
  8. Why were the disciples unable to cast out the demon? How does Mark 9:29 reveal their hearts and reliance?
  9. How do you actively combat doubt and unbelief in your own life?
  10. What do these two sections teach us about Jesus’ character and His care for humanity? How does that apply to your life today? Be specific.
