Read Mark 9:2-29
- Compare and contrast the two sections of verses 2-13 and 14-29. See also Matthew 17:1-20 and Luke 9:28-43.
- Other than the actual sequencing of events, do you think it’s valuable that these two situations are placed here? Why? Why not?
- Why do you think Jesus took only Peter, James and John?
- What is the significance of the appearance of Moses and Elijah? What about the significance of the cloud?
- What do we learn about Jesus’ nature from this experience? How does Peter’s reaction to the transfiguration reveal his understanding of Jesus?
- Does the instruction to ‘tell no one until after the resurrection’ impact the meaning of the transfiguration at all? If so, how?
- What does this passage reveal about the disciples’ struggle with faith? How does the father model faith, even in doubt?
- Why were the disciples unable to cast out the demon? How does Mark 9:29 reveal their hearts and reliance?
- How do you actively combat doubt and unbelief in your own life?
