Sermon Discussion Questions

  1. God seems to in the same breath move suddenly from speaking of harsh judgment upon His people to a ray of hope. What does this say about him, his character, and his relationship with his people?
  2. Imagine you were to mary someone who would be actively and repetitively cheating on you, even having children with other lovers. How would you respond? What range of emotions would you be experiencing?
  3. How is it possible that God can call them “Not My People” and “Children of the Living God” in the same place?
  4. What promises of hope are given in this short passage even in light of a very ugly story? How is it possible that we who so quickly turn to idols and other lovers can be given such wonderful promises?
  5. This passage foreshadows a messianic leader or head of God‘s people who will unite them in such a way that brings healing to broken relationships and deep divisions. In what ways do we as individuals, as family members, as community group members, and as a church need this kind of healing?
  6. Spend some time thanking and praising God that because of the grace of the gospel we have a savior who welcomes sinners, prostitutes, and tax collectors. (And you and me). Pray also that this message of good news would free us from turning to idols so that we might worship the Living God who calls us his children.
