PSALM 120
1. Why were these 15 Psalms called the Songs of Ascents? What was the metaphorical ascent?
2. How does our view of these Psalms as songs affect our understanding of them?
3. How do you think the singing of these songs contributed to a sense of solidarity among the Jewish people of that day?
4. Have you experienced times of distress that brought you to a point of calling out to God? How has that affected the way you view future times of distress?
5. Read Matthew 5:45 and Philippians 2:3-5. Compare the 2 passages. How do you think they relate to Psalm 120? How should these passages affect the way we conduct day to day life?
6. What do you think it means to be “in the world, but not of it?” Do you often feel as though you are living between Meshech and Kedar? What are the factors that contribute to that (please avoid thinking in political terms.) Read Ephesians 6:10-12. How do we deal with life in this kind of a world? How do we live at peace in a warring world?
7. Take time to share any other take aways that were particularly striking to you in Psalm 120.
