NATALIA M. DIAZ AVELLANEDA

Today was our second full day doing site ministries. The day started around sunrise – 5:30. We ate  breakfast with our host, Señora Rafaela.  She made us some breakfast, which is always delicious. After we were done with breakfast we finished getting ready and headed to the Plaza.

We then met up with the rest of the people that came this week from the US:  a group of six from Crown College and one individual. We all walked together to the Community Center, which is a breathtaking experience, both from the view and hills.

At the Community Center we did quiet time and a devotional with some coffee, of course! Then we either walked or drove to our ministry sites.

I am in the Child Education site, which is tutoring for kids who have trouble keeping up for various reasons. In the morning, we had a 5th grader who we were helping with multiplication of fractions, and some 3rd graders who we were helping with multiplication. In the afternoon we worked on reading.

After we finished at our site we headed back to the Community Center for Culture Night. We played some games that included smashing an eggshell on someone. We learned about the different ethnicities, and some traditional clothing and instruments. We tried some popular candies, which some of them I had tried before (but a little differently) and some I had never heard of. Guatemala definitely has some strong indigenous Mayan roots, but the Spanish culture is present, too. We finished the evening with some traditional food.

Guatemantecos have such a warm and inviting cultured. I’ve loved this experience so far. I hope I can come again next year. With love from Central America.
