Today, my dad and I walked to the Ministry Site a bit earlier than usual because my parents were leading worship. Worship consists of two songs before the devotional and one right after.
During this project, the devotionals we’ve been studying focus on the Beatitudes and what they teach us about the Kingdom of God. We work through a booklet on our own, reading the passages and answering questions, and then we all meet in the main room where someone from SI leads us in a short corporate devotional.
At my site, which is Child Education, we started the morning by buying fresh bread for the children’s snack. Afterward, we practiced reading with the younger kids. In the afternoon, we focused on math with the 5th and 6th graders. I actually got to teach Mayan numbers to the 5th graders, which was a lot of fun!
Tonight was Testimony Night. Navia, the student life coordinator, interviewed the site leaders from Child Education and Special Education. It was so inspiring to hear how God called them to their positions and how He has faithfully carried them through hard times.
Yesterday, we also had the opportunity to visit a friend of our site leader, Hermana Delia. She taught us how to make authentic tortillas and mentioned that she has to make seven pounds of them every single day for her family! Afterward, she showed us her animals. She has some chickens and two pigs— though one of the pigs is scheduled to be dinner this Saturday!
Guatemala is a very special place. It has been amazing to learn how people here do things, noticing both our similarities and our differences. The people here are so hardworking and welcoming, and I have loved getting to know them.
Con Amor!
