Sermon Discussion Questions

READ Psalm 121

1. If someone sees you in difficulty and asks you whether you need help, what do you typically say?

2. (1) What do you think it is about these hills in the psalm that makes the writer asks where he’s going to get help?

3. (2-4) How does the writer describe the kind of helper the Lord is to him? List the ways.

4. As Reformed people we talk a lot about the sovereignty of God, meaning we believe that nothing happens apart from His will or permission. If we misunderstand this idea, it can make us think of God as a passive observer. What do you see in this psalm which points to the intentional and active work of God in your life?

5. (5-6) If verses 2-4 have pointed to the protecting action of God in our lives, what do verses 5-8 point to?

6. (7-8) These final verses are among the most encouraging in the Bible but how do we square them with the fact that we do experience the effects of evil in our lives? What is the promise here?

7. The life of faith is a journey. Rather than “let go and let God,” pray as J.I. Packer says, that this week you will “trust God and get going!”
