As I was doing some morning reading this little guy scurried across the floor and I had to get in for a closer look. The two most popular lizards here in the Dominican Republic are the Anoles and the Gecko. This young Tropical House Gecko was a little over an inch long and can have a lifespan of about 15 years. They can be very musical with rhythmic high pitched chirps and clicks. Besides the occasional scare for some individuals, these small little guys have a very important job that may go unnoticed, until they aren’t around doing that job. They love to eat mosquitos. And if you’ve been to a tropical climate, you know that’s a very important job!
Their consistent activity of “doing a small thing” makes a HUGE impact, not just for daily life, but for the long run. There are so many directions this physical picture can take us spiritually, but for our purpose here: Don’t give up and don’t grow weary in doing the small things. You will reap a harvest, your labor is not in vain (see Galatians 6:9 & 1 Corinthians 15:58).
This is what is happening day in and day out at the sites here in the Dominican Republic with Students International. Whether it’s building water filters, removing stitches, teaching children, playing soccer,or using the same small hardware store over and over, God is drawing people to Himself and building His Kingdom here.
