It’s a blessing for us to return to the DR to worship and serve with the SI staff!
Mike & Elijah are serving with the facilities & maintenance ministry team. In addition to the SI base camp and housing, they have five different ministry site facilities, which always require attention. Constantly needing to be repaired, painted, replaced and renovated. The big project this week was digging out and replacing the water line at the pre-school and social work sites in Quinigua. In the midst of hard work and heat, the team has enjoyed a balance of theological discussions, great conversations and afternoon siestas!
Charlotte, Laura and I (Lisa) are serving at the medical clinic in Quinigua staffed by two wonderful, holistic doctors. They provide physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual health activities and programs for adults and children in this very impoverished community. We participate and observe with sick visits, pre-natal education, and sonograms, children’s wellness activities, hypertension and diabetes education, distribution of medications, and home visits, which include Bible study and prayer. The prenatal program provided each Mom with a bag of baby items and focused on replacing anxiety about pregnancy, delivery, and parenting with prayer and trust in God, Philippians 4:6-7 and Isaiah 41:10. The children’s program included a Bible story, song, and craft about putting on the full armor of God, Ephesians 6:10-18.
After three months of hard work, gathering and collecting lots of paperwork, both SI health clinics (Quinigua and Cienfuegos) received certification. We rejoice with them and praise God for the hands and feet of the SI staff as they provide much needed health care services for the Dominicans and Haitians here in Santiago, DR.
