Sermon Discussion Questions
Colossians 1:1-5
1. The Greek word here for “struggle” is agon, from which we derive the term agony. This is an intense agonizing over the churches in Colossae, in Laodicea, and in surrounding areas. In what sense do you think Paul can be agonizing for them while he is stuck in a Roman prison? (Answer – mainly through prayer. He is deeply concerned that they not be influenced by false teaching).
2. What are Paul’s primary desires for the church as articulated in verses 2-4?
3. What can Paul’s deep concern over people he’s never met teach us about our own view of the global church?
4. We don’t know exactly what the false teaching is in Colosse, but how do verses 2-3 give indication of what it might be?
5. How does being knit together in love prevent the spread and influence of false teaching? How have you seen this happen in your own community or at SPC?
6. What do you think he means by “plausible arguments?” What is so dangerous about such arguments? Do you get the sense that they are coming from outside of the church or from within? (My own view is within, which makes them all the more dangerous).
7. Looking at verse 5, what can this passage teach us about the power and importance of prayer?
8. The terms “good order” and “firmness” are military terms which envision troops in proper formation, prepared to defend themselves against attack. In what sense could we, like Paul, rejoice over the church being in good order and firm? How does this defend us against attack from the evil one and from false teaching?
9. Spend some time praying for unity and love for our community groups and for our church. Pray that we would be faithful to Christ, not giving in to any false teaching from without or within. Pray for our children and others who might be vulnerable to false teaching.
