Sermon Discussion Questions

Mark 16:1-8

  1. There is a growing interest among scientists and non-scientists in NDE’s (near death experiences].  Often people report finding themselves being able to see their body on an operating table or in a tunnel with a light at its end or being informed that this is not their time yet. What do you think happens after we die?
  2. READ Mark 15:40-16:20
  3. [vv. 15:42-46] People in Jesus’s own day were surprisingly divided about what happens after death: the Pharisees believed in it and the Sadducees didn’t [so they were sad-you-see!]. What is of most concern to the people who take possession of Jesus’s body immediately after His death?
  4. Which of these people’s responses to Jesus’ death do you identify with? Why?
  5. The women arrive at the tomb, asking themselves who will be there to help them move the stone away and they are shocked to see it already moved. What do they find inside and how do they react?
  6. Putting yourself in their shoes, how would you have responded? As you wait for Easter Sunday, do you find yourself still surprised, even shocked, not to say wonderfully amazed, by the Resurrection or has it become just something you just believe? Paul says “Christ has indeed been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep” [1 Cor. 15:20]. If this true, what difference does it make to your life – what you will hope for, what you will risk, what you will persevere in under hardship – because of Easter Sunday?
  7. Praise God for His amazing power, work and mercy shown through the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
