Study Questions for Psalm 139

1. Who would you say has known you the best in your life? How did they come to know you so well?

READ Psalm 139

2. [Verses 1-6]  Reading these verses carefully, what is surprising about the way David says that God knows him? If this was true for David is it true for you? Why?

3. [Verses 7-12] Take turns in your group, taking a verse each to rephrase these verses in your own words. What strikes you about the promises being made to David and to you here?

4. [Verses 13-18] In these verses, David is reassured that God has been with him not only in place but also in time. If God has known you and been with you from the start, what reassurance do these verses give for your future?

5. [Verses 19-24] How do these verses about David’s desire to be totally on God’s side come out of the reassurance that God is always with him? Knowing that God is always with him and knows him, he is lead to ask God to show him if “there be any grievous way in me?” Do you ever ask God that question about you? What reassurances does the gospel give you so that you can face yourself squarely with whatever sins are uncovered?

6. If we were to read all these questions through the experience of Jesus, how does God the Father know Him and what is His response to being known so well by the Father and the Spirit? What is the privilege given to you because of Jesus? [Hint: read John 8:55, 14:17, and 17:25-26.]

7. PRAY for yourself and others in your group that we would all increasingly grow to know how much we have been known and loved by God through Jesus Christ. Ask that by the power of the Spirit, you would know Him more.
