READ Psalm 131
1 O Lord, my heart is not lifted up;
my eyes are not raised too high;
I do not occupy myself with things
too great and too marvelous for me.
2 But I have calmed and quieted my soul,
like a weaned child with its mother;
like a weaned child is my soul within me.
3 O Israel, hope in the Lord
from this time forth and forevermore.
- Charles Spurgeon famously described this psalm as “one of the shortest psalms to read but one of the longest to learn.” Reflect as a group on why this is true.
- What is King David modeling for us not to do in verse 1? What is the temptation he is describing? (Hint: he is not talking about a lack of intellectual curiosity or mental effort.)
- If you were to follow David’s example in verse 2, what do you think you would be seeking to do with God? How can knowing God satisfy your soul in a similar way to a newborn baby that has just been well-fed?
- In verse 3, David calls Israel to find their hope forever in the LORD. How does knowing the peace that Jesus has bought for you with God give you hope so you can rest in a way that even David didn’t know?
- What simple things have people in the group found to reset the disquiet of their days and let the peace of God dwell in you richly? (Read 1 Cor. 15:13)
- PRAY for each other and for any specific situations that people want to share, that you would all increasingly be content in what Christ has called you to.
