Isaiah 9:1-7

1. Jump back a few verses to Isaiah 8:21-22. In what ways is the nation of Israel experiencing darkness, according to Isaiah?

2. What is the essence of darkness? (answer: life without God).

3. Isaiah uses the term deep darkness in 9:2. A better translation might be “death shadow.” How is it that the land of Zebulun and Naphtali were living in a death shadow?

4. Where have you been experiencing thick darkness or even possibly a death shadow in your own life?

5. Why does Isaiah use the past tense when describing the great light which God’s people have seen? (Answer: because it is such a certainty that it will occur).

6. What is Isaiah’s prediction for the future and how can we have faith in this “forecast?”

7. In a world where NICU’s are being blown apart, and violence remains a constant, why is it significant that God sent His Son as a gift in the form of a baby?

8. Where have you been struggling to welcome the presence of God‘s light?

9. How could God use us as individuals or as a community group to bring the light of hope to people walking in darkness?

10. It’s been some time, praying and exulting Christ, who is wonderful counselor, mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
