Read Hosea 8:1-9:9
-If you had to make a thesis or summary statement of this section, what would it be?
-In 8:2, how do the words of Israel contrast with their behavior? How does this reflect their relationship with God? In what specific ways do you find yourself similar?
-What things, persons, ideas, or activities compete with God for the top spot in your heart? Why?
-Read 8:5-6 again. How does the idol of Samaria represent modern, subtle forms of idolatry that can destroy our spiritual lives? Why do you think idolatry is so common for both the non-Christian and the Christian? What specifically makes it a temptation for you?
-Why and in what ways do we become like what we worship?
-Read verse 8:4 again. In what ways do you try to navigate your life without God?
-Explain the phrase “sow the wind, and they shall reap the whirlwind.” How have you seen that play out in your life?
-Explain what it means and the ways that Israel has ‘hired lovers’ (8:9). How do we do the same?
