Sermon Discussion Questions
- Why do we worship God? Is it just what we have always done on Sunday mornings? Is it just because we like the music and enjoy belting out songs and listening to the band?
- How does the Bible answer that question?
READ Psalm 95
Here in Psalm 95 the writer gives us welcome, gives us reasons and gives us warning regarding our worship.
- What welcome do you find here to worship [verses 1-2]? What is the atmosphere of the worship setting he pictures? As you consider your response to worship, do the adjectives he uses here describe how you come to worship?
- In verses 3-7c the word “for” in English invites us to consider the reasons for worship. What reasons do you find here? The two big reasons seem to be God’s greatness and our greatness to Him. How do these two ideas join in grace-filled praise of God? Does your worship balance these or tend to focus on only one?
- Why should a warning be included here, do you think and who exactly gives it? It seems a very down note to include in a psalm on worship. Why is it here? Jesus in Luke 9:57-62 gives a warning to people whose idea of worship is only for when “the good times roll.” As one commentator observes: “There is a great danger that we are carried along by the crowd into the presence of God, loving the shared excitement but lacking a change in our hearts.” How do you personally check yourself against that phony worship? What do you do to orient yourself to the God of grace and truth as you live a life of worship?
- Spend time reading words from this psalm and worshiping the Lord your God, maker and redeemer.
