Study Questions
John 14:15-31
- Remember a time in your life – if you have one – when you so needed help that without that help, you’re not sure you would have made it. Share it with the group or recall the experience for yourself. What value did that help have in your eyes after it had been rendered?
- In this passage, John recalls the last night the disciples spent with Jesus. Judas Iscariot has just left in a hurry and Jesus confides in the group that although He will be leaving them, another helper will be coming in His place. Summarizing verses 16-20, describe what this ‘helper’ will be like.
- Why do you think that Jesus tells them that (20) “in that day you will know that I am in my Father, and you in Me, and I in you”? Is there something about the experience of this ‘helper’ which will teach them something profound about who God is?
- The ‘helper’ will play various roles with the Church but He will never be taken from them. He will be counselor and guide. He will be advocate and defense counsel. He will also be the prosecuting attorney against the world. Pick one of these from the passage and explain what you understand from the passage it means and why you think it’s so useful to the Church.
- Jesus tells the disciples (15) that loving Him means keeping His commandments. Why did you think He is telling them this now when He is about to leave and what part will the ‘helper’ play in helping them to obey Jesus?
- The section ends with Jesus explaining that the world neither sees the ‘helper’ nor knows of Him. But as He leaves, He leaves them with His peace in verse 20 (presumably in the presence of this promised ‘helper’). How does obeying Jesus and cooperating with the work of the ‘helper’ mean that we will need His Peace?
- Pick one promise about the Holy Spirit’s work from this passage and apply it to a situation you are going through right now. Either tell it to the group or write it down and share it with Him as you pray.
