Sermon Discussion Questions

READ Psalm 130

1. Think of some of the reasons that you find you need or want to talk to God. List them. Can you put them in order of frequency for you (for example, 1. asking for what I need, 2. asking for forgiveness, 3. asking for guidance, 4. thanking God for answered prayers, 5. talking to Him about what I’m reading in the Bible)?

2. Reading this psalm, what does the writer here need to talk to God about most?

3. If the psalm begins with what he needs, what is the final focus of the psalm for him?

4. There is a real sense in which all our prayer lives should grow from supplication (what we think we need from God) to adoration (marveling at the grace of God to you). This psalm is obviously a plea for God’s forgiveness. When you ask for forgiveness the way you have sinned against God, does it end up with praise and joy? To the extent that it does or doesn’t, why do you think that is?

5. Jesus tells Simon the Pharisee in Luke 7 that those who are “forgiven much, love much.” Ask God to press the truth of this into your heart: that you have been forgiven much. May that fact lead us all to love the Lord who has so loved us!
