SERMON DISCUSSION DISCUSSION

Study Questions for Jude 1:8-19

  1. What is your reaction when you hear someone describe something as ‘ungodly’? What kind of situations can you imagine someone using the word in? What does Jude mean by the word?
  2. [1-10] The first symptom of these people’s ‘ungodliness’ is that they disrespect spiritual authorities. Why are these things an attack on the character and authority of God?
  3. The expression [11] “Woe to them!” This expression was used in the Old Testament to announce the pain and distress people would experience as a result of God’s judgment on them. In what ways is it being applied to these people here?
  4. [14] By piling up all these poetic metaphors about ’these people’, what point is Jude making about the kinds of damage they are doing in the church?
  5. Jude quotes this uninspired ancient religious text Enoch.  What makes it relevant to these people?
  6. [17-19] Jude quotes 2 Peter 3, reminding us, that there will be [even zealously religious people] who ridicule, or treat in a ridiculous way, serious or holy things. How will we tell who the ‘scoffers’ are in the last days according to this verse?
  7. ‘Ungodly’ – whether we appreciate the term or not is not one any Christian would want applied to himself or herself? In what area can we pray for each other that we would be more ‘godly’ [more like god]? In what area can we pray for each other that we would be more godly to the ungodly?
