Sermon Discussion Questions

Read Hosea 13

-What is the description of Israel’s idols (vss.1-3)? How does that compare to our modern day idols? Why did they continue in sin despite knowing the consequences? What does this look like for you in your life? Be specific.

-Read verse 6 again. How does satisfaction and prosperity lead to pride and forgetting God? How have you experienced that in your life?

-Talk about the graphic images of God in verses 7-11. How do those images help us to understand how He feels about sin and the severity of His judgment? What does this teach us about the danger of rejecting His authority?

-Read about the choice of Saul in 1 Samuel 8:4-9. What clue is given to why it failed? What would have made a difference, and how is that difference evident in the appointment of David as king (1 Samuel 16:1-13)? In what ways do we, like Israel, ask for “kings” (human solutions) to save us rather than trusting God?

-Read verse 14 again. What is implied in the two questions asked poetically of Death and Sheol? Compare and contrast it with what Paul says in 1 Corinthians 15:54-57.

-How can we practically apply the warnings of chapter 13 to our lives? Be specific.

-Take some time to pray together about the specific applications you discussed.
