Sermon Discussion Questions
Read Luke all of 14. While we will focus on verses 7-24 for this discussion, what is the greater context given in the surrounding verses?
-Define hospitality. How does the Bible’s teaching on hospitality differ from that of our culture?
-Why is it so tempting to seek the ‘place of honor’ in our social, professional, and even church lives? How does Jesus’ advice confront our modern culture?
-What would it look like for you to humble yourself in an everyday situation? Be specific to your life.
-In our modern context who are the “poor, crippled, lame, and blind”? Who are the people in your community that cannot repay you?
-How can our lives, not just our homes, be more focused on hospitality rather than networking?
-What are some specific ways you can show biblical hospitality in your daily context?
-What distractions and excuses do we have (like the field, oxen, or marriage) when it comes to prioritizing God’s kingdom?
-What is the point of the original invitees missing out?
-Read Romans 12:1-2. How does our consistent recognition that God welcomes us to His table by His mercy and grace (when we have nothing to offer or repay) change how we sacrificially treat others? What does this really look like for you?
-Spend the remainder of the time praying about creative ways in which you personally and your group together can live lives of generous hospitality.
