Passage: Jonah 3

    1. How many times in your life have you been given a second chance to do something really important which you messed up the first time? Share the story, if you’d like, with the group.
    2. READ Jonah 3
    3. What exactly does Jonah get to do over again in verses 2-3? How does he respond this time?
    4. The writer emphasizes that Nineveh, the capital of the Assyrian Empire, was a great city. In fact, Nineveh it says was an exceedingly great city. What would you say the connection is between Nineveh’s physical size [2-3], the size of its population [4:11] and how important the city is to God that the people who live there should be rescued?
    5. Jonah preaches the message that God has given him to preach [4b]. What was the immediate impact of the simple message he brings. What did the message tell the people who heard it?
    6. How is the message received from the highest to the lowest in Nineveh’s imperial society? Why is the King’s response important? Take a look at verse 10. What seems to be important to God in the repentance of the Ninevites?  Repentance involves something to believe and something to do. How are the two connected in Biblical thought? How are you repenting and believing the gospel right now?
    7. Pray for people you know who are asking what they should do to find God’s mercy in Christ.  As you share about Christ, remember Romans 15:21: Those who have never been told of him will see, ,and those who have never heard will understand.”
