Sermon Discussion Questions

Zechariah 10

  1. What are the shepherds or leaders of Israel doing to provoke God’s anger?
  2. Jump over to Zechariah 11. What additional description does this chapter give about foolish or worthless shepherds (see Zech 11:5; 15-17)?
  3. Zechariah 10:3 and following offers God’s solution to the problem of failed or oppressive leadership in Israel. What does He offer? What are the three images used to describe the one who will come?
  4. What is the significance of each image?    /     Answers:
    1. Cornerstone: The foundation around which a building was constructed. Every other stone falls in line with this first one.
    2. Tent Peg: Used to hold up a tent, an image of solid stability. Immovable, able to withstand great force.
    3. Battle Bow: Representing military might, all-powerful in battle.
  5. What does it mean for God to whistle for his people? (see verse 8) What hope does Zechariah offer for those who may feel like sheep without a shepherd?
  6. Spend some time envisioning the final scenes of this poem. How might we align our own lives with Christ who is the cornerstone this week?
  7. Where have you been looking to “household gods” or other sources of life and comfort apart from the Good Shepherd?
  8. Read Psalm 23 and pray for one another to trust in the Good Shepherd.
