Hebrews 11:1-16, 39-40 & 12:1-2
1. If you asked 100 people what the word “faith” means, what answers do you think you would receive?
2. How does the Bible define faith according to Hebrews 11:1?
3. Why is faith so important? (see verses 2 and 6)
4. Why do you think the author of Hebrews gives specific examples of faith and what patterns do you observe in this long list?
5. What are the rewards for these figures having had faith and acting on their faith?
6. What were these people of faith motivated by and what were they looking forward to?
7. It is in Christ that all the earlier promises finally come to fruition. In what sense are those OT saints “made perfect” along with all of us who believe?
8. Look at Hebrews 12:2. How is Jesus’ example of faith similar to the figures mentioned in ch. 11? Why is Jesus better and different from any other example of faith?
9. What does it mean that Jesus despised the shame of the cross? What was his motivation to endure the cross?
10. How can we live in faith this week as we seek to follow the founder and perfecter of our faith? Spend some time in prayer together that we would run the race with endurance, looking to Jesus as our substitute and our example.
