Sermon Discussion Questions

Can you remember how you felt before a difficult interview for an important job? Would it have helped to have a friend or someone you knew was on your side in the interview room with you?

READ Hebrews 4:14 – 5:10

    1. Read Hebrews 4:13 again from last week’s passage. Can you see the author’s connection between verse 13 and verse 14? What is it?
    2. The High Priest’s role in Israel’s worship was to act as mediator between the people and God representing them before God. List the ways in which the author says that Jesus is such a mediator on our side before His Father [vv.14-15].
    3. What difference should this make to the attitude we have when we approach God especially when we have sinned and fallen short of the way He has asked us to live?
    4. [5:1-15] How is Jesus different from other high priests Israel has known and in what ways is He the same?
    5. Melchizedek was a priest that Abraham encountered long before there was a nation of Israel and an order for priests in the Temple. He was unlike any other priest since: he was the only member of his order and was also a king. Reading verses 6-10, describe how Jesus fits in with this order.
    6. Jesus was unique but His unique role was something that Israel had long been told was coming. Take a moment to praise God together as a group for all the ways in which Jesus Christ has been the answer to your prayers.
