Matthew 6:19-24
1. What do you think Jesus has in mind in using the word treasure? In the Greek language, the word literally means “things that can be stored up.” What do you think that includes in modern terms?
2. In the context of this passage, what does it mean to lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven?
3. What are the various ways in which treasure can be lost? How does anxiety over the possibility of losing our wealth give indication of what we value most?
4. The heart represents one’s deepest desires, motivations, the center of one’s being. According to Jesus, one’s heart will either be focused on earthly possessions, or heavenly treasure. Take a few moments to consider which of these describes you lately. Anyone bold enough to share?
5. Verses 22-23 may seem unrelated to a teaching on treasure and the heart. But Jesus clearly sees this as a central focus. How can the “eye” be affected by wealth and possessions?
6. Money and possessions are intended to be a good gift which God gives us to be a blessing to others, thereby storing up treasures in heaven. Carefully read John 3:16-17. How can the grace of the gospel reshape our attitude toward money and cause us to treasure what God treasures the most?
7. Many of us believe the myth that we can have dual allegiance to God and mammon (wealth, possessions, resources which sustain us). It’s quite possible for us to pay lip service to worship of God, but find ourselves more focused on mammon. What specific steps could we take to store up treasures in heaven this week?
8. Spend some time in prayer for God to change our view of wealth and open our eyes to the good works of generosity that he has for us.
