Read Mark 2:18-22…see also the parallel accounts in Matthew 9:14-17 and Luke 5:33-39.
- After reading that passage, look at the context, both before and after. What in that context might inform our understanding of the parables in verses 18-22.
- It is John’s disciples that come up and ask the question about fasting (see the Matthew account). How is their approach different from the other religious leaders in the chapter, and how is Christ’s response to them different?
- In verses 21 and 22, what, or who, is the “old” and what, or who, is the “new”? Why aren’t they compatible? Be specific.
- What does this parable teach us about the King and Kingdom of God and the nature of the Christian life?
- What are some of your “old cloths” or “old wineskins”?
- In what ways does this text specifically apply to your life? What does it mean for the Christian in the area of the spiritual discipline of fasting?
