CHRIST IS THE BEARER OF OUR BURDENS…

The Gospel of Luke is depicted in the Lindisfarne Gospels as an ox. We tend to think of the ox as a slow, rather stubborn beast, but to speak of the ox in the ancient world was to describe the world’s most powerful engine. The ox was the beast of burden, pulling carts and carrying heavy loads, plowing and treading grain. The ox was a sacrificial animal. These images fit well with Luke’s presentation of Jesus. Christ is the bearer of our burdens, the One who has done the work for us, and above all, has been sacrificed for our sins. As we study Luke through the winter and spring, we are seeking to follow as disciples in the furrows that Christ has plowed, depending on His work every step of the way.
